雪岳山被称为雪山、雪峰山，由于积雪长年不化，岩石是象雪一样的白色，所以被称为雪岳。雪岳山国立公园于1965年11月被指定为天然纪念物保护区，又在1973年12月被设为公园保护区，1982年8月被联合国科教文组织 (UNESCO)定为生物圈保存地区。
公园座落在江原道束草市、麟蹄郡、高城郡、襄阳郡之内。以最高峰大青峰为中心，东面叫外雪岳，西面叫内雪岳，又被分为北内雪岳和南内雪岳。北内雪岳由流向 麟蹄川的北川和百潭川地区的溪流构成。内雪岳的溪流绵延不断。内雪岳的景色最美，沿着雪岳山各水流汇集成的百潭川溪流往上走，便可到达百潭寺。百潭川的上 流有伽耶洞溪流、水帘洞溪流，走过永矢庵、万景台，就是通往雪岳洞的马等岭（1，327m）。沿水帘洞溪流而上，有卧龙瀑布和双瀑，再往上可以到达位于 1，224m地点的凤顶庵。登上大青峰，可以看到周围的山峰，在这里看日出可以使心情变得虔敬。南内雪岳指的是从玉女汤附近到寒溪岭一带的小溪。位于长寿 台北面溪流的大胜瀑布是内雪岳风景最美的，高88米。此外还有龙垈里南面的溪流中的十二仙女汤、玉汤瀑布和龙汤瀑布.
